Oklahoma, the Sooner State, is located in the south central region of the US. Resembling a pan in shape, the state is bordered to the north by Kansas, to the east by Arkansas, to the south by Texas, and at the edge of the panhandle to the west by New Mexico. The panhandle region borders for a short distance to the north the state of Colorado. The northeastern area of the state also borders Missouri for a short distance.

The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words for "red people", okla and humma. Oklahoma was originally part of two territories, the Oklahoma territory and the Indian territory. Attempts to create an all-Indian state (named Sequoyah) in the east failed, and Oklahoma, which combined land in the two territories as well as a neutral strip (the panhandle) was the 46th state to enter the Union in November, 1907.

Oklahoma's economy is centered around its two largest cities, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, where approximately two thirds of the state's residents live. It is a major producer of food (principally cattle and wheat), energy (oil and natural gas), and manufactured parts.
